May Short Story Challenge - Are You Done?

May is almost at an end. Our very first Short Story Challenge month. Have you finished your story? I just finished mine, and didn't send it to an editor, but did send it to a tutor. My story is women's fiction about three sisters. Come on guys, post your progress, frustrations, achievements.

  1. I'm said to say that while I've started a few short stories (I had alot of great ideas this month), I haven't finished any of them. My Muse has been playing tag with each of them, not really letting me work on one consistently. Maybe by the end of June I'll have one of them ready and published somewhere :) Anybody else do better?

  2. Nope. As per my comment on your other post, I got bogged down in trying to write something that would sell, rather than something I was really passionate about writing. I've really been questioning whether I really should even be writing short stories lately.

I have an idea for a collection of stories though, that's been mulling around in my head for several years (longer, probably). And I just read this post on BubbleCow (http://ow.ly/9S9s) that seems like very good advice on what to possibly do with short stories. So I'll try again for June, this time a project that I really want to work on, and we'll see how that goes.

Great challenge - even though I didn't get anything done, I learned a lot about my personal goals and skills, so it was still successful, I think. :-)

  3. Coupla first drafts that need edits, but no "complete" shorts. Been bogged down turning my WIP into something remotely readable. ;-)

  4. I wrote a couple of Flash Fiction stories, over 900 words each. Whether or not Flash constitutes as a short story, I have learned a lot about writing and submitting, so I appreciate the challenge nonetheless.

  5. I have tried submitting a few times, but my writing gets rejected as being too metaphorical or not mainstream. Does anyone have the same problem?

  6. I just discovered your website-wish I had known about this earlier, and I might have submitted!

  7. Hi, LW.
I've just posted on the 'May 2009 - short story challenge' thread.
    Keep up the good work!

  8. Thank you all for your comments. About my story, like I posted, it was a real drag finishing it because my heart wasn't in it. I received comments from tutor and she said that the idea was pleasant (how dull) but to be accepted for consideration it would need a significant re-write.

I have already decided that I am not going to waste any time on that for now. It will remain in the "maybe" drawer, and start working on things I enjoy.
